Aliases: finding black market, finding bm, bm location, bm entrance, black market entrance

This page details strategies for locating the Black Market. For strategies in the Black Market itself, see Black Market Strategies or Black Market Low% Strategies.

Possible Entrance Locations

The Black Market entrance will spawn randomly on either 2-1, 2-2, or 2-3 behind either a jungle terrain or gray brick tile. The tile below, which contains the door platform, must also be a jungle terrain or gray brick tile (unless it is the Haunted Castle entrance). Additionally, the Black Market entrance cannot spawn in the following locations:

  • In the top 2 rows of the level
  • At the bottom of the lake in a Rushing Water level
  • Inside of or above an indestructible tile
  • Inside of or above a shop tile (including vault tiles)
  • Inside of or above an entrance or exit door platform (not including the Haunted Castle entrance)
  • Inside of or above a 50/50 terrain tile or unmodified terrain tile
  • Inside of or above a tile generated by floor spreading
  • Directly next to or below a water tile (spawning diagonal to water is allowed)

Locating the Entrance

The Black Market entrance can be visible on all eight orthogonally and diagonally adjacent sides, except for directly below. Therefore, any 3x3 chunk of terrain fitting the conditions described above can be a spot for the Black Market to be completely invisible. The Black Market entrance looks like this:

Most of these individual tiles can be spotted by looking for the distinct bright green color of the leaves around the exit door, which contrasts with the more faded green of the Jungle backdrop. The bottom corners, however, require extra attention to spot based on the specific distinct vines that appear. The bottom right corner vine is very large and takes up nearly an entire tile, and is not to be confused with a similar-looking but smaller vine that makes up part of the jungle background decoration. A reference image is provided below for what these exposed bottom corners look like by themselves.
